Description

For travellers who want the day at full stretch. You visit four islands — including Perro Chico with its shipwreck for snorkelling — swim in the Natural Pool, and meet the Guna community up close: their molas, their history and their way of life in the archipelago.

The community visit is what separates this route from the rest. Guna Yala is autonomous territory and these islands are inhabited: not a stage set for tourism, but people at home, with their school and their canoes. The guide explains before you step ashore how to behave and what may be photographed. That stop falls at 13:00, and the last swim in the Natural Pool at 15:30.

We leave your hotel at 5:00 am by 4x4 and cross the mountain range to the port, about two and a half hours of curves. The boat with life jackets, the island lunch and the local guide are included. The comarca fee is separate and settled right there, in cash or by card to the driver.

Great if understanding where you are matters as much to you as swimming, and you want to buy molas from the women who sew them.

Maybe not your tour if you want a beach day and nothing else: you'd be paying for a cultural half you won't use.

What is the price?

$149 per traveller. That covers transport from Panama City, the sailing, the meals of the format and the guide. Outside it sits the comarca entry, $22 for foreigners and $7 for residents, paid on the way in, in cash or by card to the driver.

What exactly do you see?

This route names 3: Isla Perro Chico, Isla Diablo, Isla Pelícano. Some formats sell an area rather than a single island, because in the remote cays you anchor where the sea allows that day.

What time do you leave and when do you return?

Departure is always before dawn, around 5:00, because the mountain pass and the tide impose it. The return depends on the format: single-day trips come back that afternoon, multi-night ones on the last day.

What exactly does the price difference buy?

Two things the cheaper routes do not carry: a fourth island and the 13:00 hour inside the village. The $149 do not pay for a different boat or a different lunch; they pay for the archipelago to be explained from within, by the people who live in it.

Can you take photographs inside the community?

With permission, and not everywhere. Before landing the guide points out which areas are open to visitors and whom to ask before shooting. The rule is simple: these are homes, not scenery, and a camera in front of somebody’s door is requested, not imposed.

Should I bring small change for the village stop?

It is worth it. In the community you buy molas and crafts from the people who make them, and there is no card reader and no cash machine: cash only, and small notes are better. Nobody is obliged to buy anything, but arriving without a dollar leaves out the part that sets this route apart.
