The Guna Yala Region Tax: How Much It Is and Why It Is Paid
If you’re planning your trip to San Blas, you’ll always see the same note: the regional tax is not included. Here we explain what it is, how much it costs, and why it exists—with complete transparency.
How Much Is It?
- Foreigners: $22 per person.
- Citizens and residents: $7 per person.
- Children ages 0–9: exempt.
It is paid on entering the region, in cash or by card to our driver, and the money goes to the Guna authorities. That’s why no reputable tour operator includes it in their price: it’s not a fee we collect.
Why is it paid?
San Blas is not a national park: it is autonomous territory of the Guna people, who have been managing their islands independently for a century. The fee supports local communities—funding schools, healthcare, and the upkeep of the islands you’ll be enjoying.
Looked at this way, it’s the best $22 you’ll spend on the trip: it keeps paradise a paradise and in the hands of its people.
Practical Tip
If you pay in cash, bring the exact amount in small bills, separate from the cash you’ll need for extras; if not, pay by card to the driver. Payment is quick, and the guide will let you know when it’s time to pay.
