What to Bring on a Day Trip to San Blas (Complete List)

Packing for San Blas is easy if you know what to expect: a full day spent on a boat, at the beach, and in the sun—with no stores or ATMs. Here’s the list we give our travelers.

Essentials

• Original passport or ID card. This is required to enter the Guna Yala region—copies or photos are not accepted.
• Cash. For the region’s entrance fee ($22 for foreigners / $7 for locals) and any extras (coconuts, handicrafts, drinks). There are no ATMs in San Blas.
• Wear your swimwear from home. This saves you from having to find a place to change when you arrive on the first island.

To enjoy the day

• Towel and a change of dry clothes for the return trip.
• Sunscreen (preferably biodegradable), hat, and sunglasses.
• Waterproof bag or Ziploc bag for your phone and documents: the boat gets splashed.
• Sandals or water shoes.

What Almost Everyone Forgets

• Motion sickness pills: the 4x4 ride is winding (~2.5 hours). Take them before you leave.
• Portable charger: there’s no guaranteed electricity on the islands.
• Snacks if you’re traveling with kids; lunch is served around noon.
