Description

Nugnudub is one of the most photogenic Guna communities in the archipelago: traditional cane houses almost over the water, wooden canoes tied up outside and neighbours sewing molas in the shade. You walk the island with free time to photograph before closing the day with a swim in the Natural Pool.

Worth saying plainly: this is an inhabited island, not a set. You photograph with permission, and the guide explains before you land what is and isn't acceptable — something that genuinely matters in a Guna community. In exchange you come back with images that appear in no beach brochure. Arrival at 8:30, lunch at midday and the Natural Pool at 15:00.

Pickup from 5:00 am at your hotel, door-to-door 4x4 and about two and a half hours of road. Includes boat with life jackets, a typical lunch and a local guide; the comarca entrance fee is paid on the day, in cash or by card to the driver.

Great if documentary photography interests you, and people as much as landscape.

Maybe not your tour if you came for the postcard beach: this island is a village, not an empty cay.

Doubts about Nugnudub Island: Guna Photography Day

What is the price?

$135 per traveller. That covers transport from Panama City, the sailing, the meals of the format and the guide. Outside it sits the comarca entry, $22 for foreigners and $7 for residents, paid in cash on the way in.

What exactly do you see?

This route names 1: Isla Nugnudub. Some formats sell an area rather than a single island, because in the remote cays you anchor where the sea allows that day.

What time do you leave and when do you return?

Departure is always before dawn, around 5:00, because the mountain pass and the tide impose it. The return depends on the format: single-day trips come back that afternoon, multi-night ones on the last day.

Can you photograph the people who live there?

By asking, and not in every corner. Before landing the guide marks which areas are open to visitors and which are private homes. A picture that was asked for turns out better than a stolen one, and here it is the only acceptable option: the island is a village with a school, not a set.

Is there a beach to swim at?

On the island, hardly any: it is inhabited ground, with houses right down to the shore. The day’s swim comes at the end, at the Piscina Natural, once you have walked the village. If the plan was six hours in the water, this is not the route.

How does it differ from the other route to a community?

In what you look at. Here the interest is the houses beside the water, the moored canoes and the light on the cane: it is a route about images. The other community in the catalogue is walked for the textiles and daily life, and you leave it with a mola rather than a roll of film.

The rest — document, comarca fee, route changes — is answered separately. Go to the frequently asked questions →
